Alastair Wilson

This is Alastair he is the predator scientist on base studying the furl seals primarily – he will have his 30th birthday on base. He is from Wales and has worked for the RSPB and also in the Shetlands. Up until now he has specialised in seabirds. His great great uncle isEdward Wilson who died with Scott on the way back from the South Pole in 1912. This is what brought Alastair south and he will be here on the 100th anniversary of Edwards death.

  1. Edward Wilson is Alastair’s great great uncle ….. affectionately known as Uncle Ted.
    The smock Ali is wearing was lovingly made by his Mum – orders taken!!!
    In your picture of the seals all on the beach there is one at the top in the middle with something red on it? What is it?

  2. That is a rock with red paint. It is used to ‘segment’ the beach – total of 8. Alastair takes pictures from a high point of the beach and then can count the number of males, females, juveniles and pups from the photo that way he doesn’t have to wade through angry seals in each segment.
