Post in Antarctica
Dr. Claire is the postmistress on base and has it open in on Monday lunch times. We have our own British Antarctic Territory stamps and also first day covers which I shall grab a few of this coming week. Post coming in is very irregular some came in on the Dash 7 from the Falklands that we were on and then some more on the JCR. The next mail run incoming is not expected until February. We will be sending out next week on the JCR and they will send it out at the end of December. Below is a picture of our mailbox!
On our way down some stamp collectors who specialise in Antartica stamps were on a research visit to the Falklands and they latched onto Claire and asked her to do a talk about being a postmistress in Antartica. Not quite sure what she will be able to say!

HI,
I finally made it to your blog now that you are in BAS. I cannot believe you are paid to be there. Every week seems like something people would pay 10K to do. I am not sure I would have been able to go down that tunnel that was only as wide as you. But the ski-ing, ice axe arrest practice, mountain climbing, penguin herding, boat moving, ice diving, plane flying and remote cabins all just look amazing!
Would you mind taking a photo of the stamp if you happen to have a chance? I would love to see what they look like. I used to save all the postcards I got from remote places, but with the advent of email, that tradition has mostly gone away.

It is really pretty amazing as you say that I am paid to be here. I am loving my new life and all the opportunities that are offered to me. Next week I will probably be going out into the field for a week manning a depot 200 miles from here with Clive. We will stay in a hut that was built in the 50’s and make christmas dinner on a primus!
The crevasse is pretty amazing. Actually I am going down it tomorrow morning for some filming that the BAS photographer is doing. He wanted some people to model the new kit so for some reason I got asked!
This place has more to offer than anywhere else in the world and I will be back next year for sure. Now I just need to figure out how to balance out the sailing with being down south!
Send me an email with an address and I will send you a postcard with the stamp. It won’t get to you until February though! I will take a few photos as well of stamps.
Thanks for stopping by!
